What Movies Use Contact Lenses?

In the quest to achieve striking cinematic experiences, many actors are required to wear movie contact lenses. For some, a specific eye colour or design is chosen to stay true to the original material, for example, a book or comic book. For horror movies, creepy contact lenses are often used to completely disconnect the actors from their human form or to show that a character has been infected by a zombie virus. For others, it can enhance the world that is being created for fantasy genres.

While some celebrities report struggling to wear movie coloured contact lenses, often those who have hired an optometrist have the most success. It is important to note that often the golden rules of contact lens wear are broken and thus problems occur, for example, wearing the contact lenses for too long (especially if they are sclera lenses), or not getting the contact lenses fitted.

Did Jim Carrey wear contacts for The Grinch?

One of the accessories of Jim Carrey’s elaborate Grinch costume was coloured contact lenses. The Grinch is another character that looks amazing with Yellow Avatar Coloured Contact Lenses as they are very similar to the yellow eyes that Jim Carrey had in How The Grinch Stole Christmas. However, there is a fun blooper to spot. Eagle-eyed fans noticed a scene where Jim Carrey is not wearing contact lenses with his Grinch costume. Check out our Grinch blog for costume ideas.

Do they use contact lenses in Twilight?

The actors in the Twilight Saga do wear contact lenses to match Stephenie Meyer’s descriptions. Robert Pattinson has been interviewed the most extensively on the subject as he had difficulty wearing his movie contacts. However, his co-star Kristen Stewart successfully wore coloured contact lenses for Bella in human and vampire form. Bella is described as having brown eyes while Kristen Stewart has naturally green eyes so she wore natural lenses. When she becomes a vampire, like all the other Cullen characters, she wears vampire contact lenses. The vampire eye colour varies depending on how bloodthirsty they are. A satiated vampire has black eyes while a newborn thirsty vampire has bright red. Depending on their chosen diet, they may also have golden or orange eyes. Here are some of our top picks for Twilight Lenses:

  • Black Halloween Contact Lenses
  • Orange Twilight Star Contact Lenses
  • Crazy Clown Contact Lenses
  • Orange Werewolf Contact Lenses

Does Johnny Depp wear contact lenses in Alice In Wonderland?

Johnny Depp wears green contact lenses in Alice In Wonderland to create the Mad Hatter’s bright and fluorescent eye colour. His eyes were enlarged in post-production to create the definitive look for the Mad Hatter. Tim Burton’s version is popular during Halloween and for cosplay so our Mad Hatter Contact Lenses are in demand. We have also seen cosplayers pairing Crazy Clown Lenses, Green Hulk Lenses and Green Werewolf Lenses with Mad Hatter makeup. Check out our Alice In Wonderland blog for costume inspiration.

Do they wear contact lenses in The Haunting Of Hill House?

In The Haunting Of Hill House, actor Henry Thomas infamously wore blue contact lenses when portraying young Hugh Crane. The blue contact lenses garnered attention for all the wrong reasons due to their unnatural appearance, particularly during close-ups.

If you are looking for realistic natural blue lenses, it is easy to achieve with the right design. Our favourites include Sky Blue Coloured Contacts, Saltwater Breeze Coloured Contacts and Cold As Ice Coloured Contacts.

Did Michael Rooker wear contact lenses in Guardians of the Galaxy?

For the hit MCU franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, Michael Rooker wore red contact lenses for the role of Yondu. The red mini sclera lenses contrasted with his bright blue skin and gold teeth.

Throughout the making of Marvel movies, several actors have tried to wear movie coloured contacts for their characters but not all have been successful. With so many imaginative fantasy and mutant characters in series such as X Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Avengers there are plenty of opportunities to create cool cosplays. Does Ron Perlman wear contact lenses in Hellboy?

Does Chris Hemsworth wear contact lenses in Mad Max?

Chris Hemsworth is no novice when it comes to wearing coloured contact lenses for his acting roles. In fact, he seems to enjoy changing his eye colour to help get into character. For Mad Max, Hemsworth swaps his baby blues for aged eyes as part of his prosthetics and makeup. It certainly made an impact, with movie fans noticing the intensity and brilliance of the way he uses his gaze to act out the scenes.

Did Natalie Portman wear contact lenses in Black Swan?

Natalie Portman did wear red contact lenses in Black Swan. To depict the paranoia and mental strain that Nina is experiencing in Black Swan, the character has red eyes when she fully transforms into the Black Swan. This powerful image is often the version of Nina that we see cosplayed and worn for Halloween. The dramatic eye makeup, feathers, and striking outfit are paired with intense red eyes that were achieved by custom contact lenses. Many of the other effects were created in post-production but the red eyes were movie lenses. Some of our popular styles for Black Swan eyes include Red Voldemort Lenses, Red Angelic Lenses and Red Halloween Lenses.

Did they use contact lenses in 28 Days Later?

The actors playing undead zombies in 28 days later were required to wear red contact lenses that had an infected design. Reportedly, the team hired an optometrist to ensure the contact lenses were fitted correctly. This ensured that all the actors’ eyes were kept safe and healthy. The creepy red eyes of the infected 28 days later characters can be achieved with coloured contact designs such as Crazy Clown Lenses and Darth Maul Lenses.
