Our team of makeup artists has created Coraline makeup for a range of characters from the movie including Coraline Jones and Other Mother. Their distinctive button eyes are present for much of the film and can be achieved with a prop or a pair of colored contact lenses. Turning your eyes a different color can give the same haunting effect to Neil Gaiman’s horror story. Our favorite contact lens choices for Coraline button eyes are:
@hollymurraymakeup used her incredible makeup skills to paint a Coraline costume onto her body. Her incredible attention to detail continues with clever contouring of the face and cartoon-like facial features such as eyebrows, mouth, and eyelashes. To complete the look, Holly has turned Coraline’s eyes purple with the Violet Two Tone Colored Contact Lenses.
@fancymay_makeup has taken inspiration from the Coraline button eyes costume. This version of Coraline is perfect for Halloween as it includes fake blood and fake stitching for an extra creepy look. For her Coraline makeup, @fancymay_makeup has chosen the White Blind Colored Contact Lenses. These lenses are perfect for a spooky photoshoot as they totally blank out the eye. However, this effect is achieved by covering the pupil and iris with a colored lens, therefore blocking vision. If you are wearing your Coraline costume to a fancy dress party, we recommend trying a style such as our White Zombie Colored Contact Lenses or wearing a blind effect lens in one eye only.
As you can see in this video, in contrast to Holly, Fancy May has opted to wear real clothing for her Coraline cosplay. Coraline’s outfit can easily be made by customizing items you already own or DIYing second hand clothing. This is a great way to create a Halloween costume on a budget. With some simple makeup, a blue wig, and a pair of colored contact lenses, your Coraline costume will be ready to go.
If you are planning group Coraline costumes, then you will definitely need The Other Mother. This essential character is the main villain of the story and is the creepiest character of them all. Whether you are creating a DIY costume or using Other Mother makeup, this spooky character is a fun choice for Halloween.
In this Other Mother costume, @sfx_by_bry has used body paint to complete her costume, including the button eyes. When she closes her eyes you can see the full button but to not interrupt the illusion, she has opted for Black Mesh Colored Contact Lenses so that her costume looks just as scary when her eyes are open.
If you do want to wear clothing for your Other Mother costume then all you will need is a black and white polka dot top or plain black top, just like @avada___kedavra. In her makeup, she has focused on painting her face with an exaggerated smile in black paint, dark black eyebrows, a scar over one eye, and lines on her face to look like cracks. We are getting creepy doll vibes from this Other Mother makeup. To complete the look, she has added black hair and White Rinnejan Ring Colored Contact Lenses.
As you can see, in some of the pictures she has button eyes. However, if you are planning to go out while wearing your costume, having a pair of contact lenses to wear as a second option will help you to see clearly and enjoy your event.
There are so many cool Coraline costume ideas to try out for Halloween or other fancy dress events. Here are some of our favorite Coraline characters to include in your group costumes:
It is a true testament to the film and book that makeup artists are still creating Coraline and Other Mother makeup all these years after its release date. There have been multiple trends on social media involving Coraline peeking into the other world through The Stone. Whether you need a last minute Halloween costume or are looking for a new SFX makeup challenge, a Coraline costume can be created as simply or as detailed as you choose.
